Soul Radics and Bad Uncle on Roots Rock Rebel! March 20 podcast

Soul Radics from Nashville TN

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Hello radio massive!

Welcome to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel. We have a huge and unique podcast to bring you this week. In the first hour of the program, we got on the phone with Dani and Jay from the Soul Radics down in Nashville, Tennessee! If you haven’t heard of the Soul Radics yet, make sure you check them out! They just released their debut full-length album called “Down to the Hall” on Jump Up Records, which you can get on vinyl, CD, and iTunes. From their own Facebook page:

“Soul Radics hit the scene with blistering traditional sounds and gritty soul melodies. Virtually fearless, it’s an original take on ska, reggae, and rocksteady with powerful female vocals and heavy, hardhitting rhythms.”

In the second hour of the show, we were joined live in studio by Bad Uncle, straight from the gritty streets of Montreal! Bad Uncle are a hard band to define. Aspects of the band are operatic metal, some are more klezmer-tinged, perhaps polka-billy, but definitely with a punk-rock edge. They are launching a rock opera in Montreal this Saturday, and shared some great songs live with us. Make sure you check them out!

Montreal’s finest polkabilly, Bad Uncle

Besides that, we also inserted an anti-war reggae set to mark the 10 year anniversary of the American invasion and war on Iraq. Fuck the war! And many other great ska and punk rock tunes ensued.

Be sure to tune in to the program next week for an interview with The Frightnrs from NYC!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Hello radio massive! Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel! As per usual, we bring you an action packed 2-hour podcast filled with top-notch ska, reggae, and punk, as well as some amazing guests for interviews.

Our special guest on the show this week was Raghav “Diggy” Dang, the guitarist from New Delhi-based band The Ska Vengers. The Ska Vengers just released their debut album in December, 2012, and it’s on fire! A wicked blend of 2-tone ska, dancehall reggae, and politics – just what we love here at Roots Rock Rebel! Raghav spoke to us about how the band was formed, some of their most memorable gigs (including playing in a prison in India!), as well as some of the band members’ side projects. Raghav is also part of India’s first reggae sound system, the Reggae Rajahs. Be sure to check them out, and pick up the Ska Vengers album!

In the second hour of the program, we were joined in studio by 2 members of Mayday. Mayday are an anti-fascist francophone streetpunk band from Montreal, and they just played the Rock Against Racism MTL series this week. Be sure to check out their EP!

Next week on the show, we’ll bring you an interview with members of Soul Radics from Nashville! They have a new album out on Jump Up records called “Down to the Hall”, so be sure to tune in for that!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

10pm-12am

CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Hello rebels, trouble-makers, and dancehall warriors!

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel on CKUT radio in Montreal! Every year, March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate struggles against sexism and patriarchy, but also a day to fight other forms of oppression like racism, homophobia, and poverty. Each year we do an International Women’s Day special on Roots Rock Rebel, and this year is no exception. So we bring you 2 hours of music from the finest women in reggae, punk, and ska!

We were joined on the show by Dolores Chew of the Women of Diverse Origins collective in Montreal to talk a bit about the importance of IWD. We also had a visit from Lorraine Muller, aka The Fabulous Lolo! Lorraine is no stranger to Roots Rock Rebel, but she filled us in on some very exciting details for a huge IWD rocksteady/ska show in Montreal this Friday with her band, The Forthrights, and Take the Boys!

Finally, in the second hour of the program, our friend DJ Katia came by to spin a another guest set of some amazing female-fronted punk bands on vinyl. A must!

Enjoy International Women’s Day, and see you in the streets!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!
