Western Standard Time on Roots Rock Rebel! May 9 podcast

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Welcome to this week’s Roots Rock Rebel podcast!

Our weekly blend of ska, reggae, punk rock, and soul music paid tribute to some heavy hitters in the music business this week. The music world lost two amazing innovators recently. Adam Yauch (aka MCA) of the Beastie Boys, a trail-blazer in punk rock, hip-hop, and funk, as well as Lloyd Brevett, the founding bass player of The Skatalites from Jamaica. We spent the first part of the show paying tribute to these two great musicians, and celebrating their artistic contributions.

Our special guest on the program this week was Eitan Avineri, who is the executive producer and trumpet player for Western Standard Time, a big band tribute to the Skatalites! It was very fitting that the week of Lloyd Brevett’s passing, we spoke with Avineri about the legacy of the Skatalites music, and explored a whole new interpretation of traditional ska. Western Standard Time combines all the best in jazz, swing, and ska, with a distinct LA flavour. The band also features an all-star line-up made up of past and present members of The Aggrolites, Hepcat, and Jump With Joey. Check them out and buy their new full-length album here!

This podcast is also jam packed with new music and rarities from Maddie Ruthless, The Inciters, King Django, and Joe Strummer. As always, we have some big guests coming up on the show in the weeks to come, including The Beatdown, The Fundamentals, Maddie Ruthless, and Victor Rice! So keep tuning in every Wednesday from 10pm-12am EST (not WST!) at www.ckut.ca.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to everyone who voted CKUT as the #1 radio station in the Montreal Mirror’s Best of Montreal poll!! Check out the results here.

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!
