Hepcat LIVE at Whiskey A-Go-Go (1992)

GO FEET! Radio presents …

Hepcat live at Whiskey A-Go-Go

Episode 147, 3 August 2011

The Hepcat concert used in this episode of GO FEET! Radio was recorded in 1992 when Hepcat was opening for Desmond Dekker at the Whisky A-Go-Go in Los Angeles. Dave Hillyard found it in his archives, and he worked with the Whatevshi.org crew to restore it. It truly is a special find, and a privilege to hear these guys when they were just starting their career. So check out a few of the songs from the concert on this GO FEET! Radio episode or go download the full concert from Whatevski.org and feel the Hepcat love. I only intended to play the first half of the concert on air my show but man oh man once I started it up I couldn’t stop at half way so I played the whole gig. I so wish I got to see Hepcat LIVE, I still wish for that musical treat actually!!! Did anyone here see this Whiskey A Go Go gig, or any other Hepcat gig?

The Lions At New Gabah

Pandomonium. Cars stopped for hours on end. Gridlock terrorizing the fair city of Los Angeles. CARMAGEDDON!!!! This wasn’t enough to keep me from taking the freeways  to Hollywood to check out Los Angeles band The Lions. Featuring members of Hepcat, Ocean 11, Fitz and The Tantrums, De La Soul, and Raphael Saadiq, this all star collective laid a mean reggae groove last night that didn’t let up.

From the opening drum crack, The Lions came out roaring. The first number was  a blazing number With MC Black Shakespeare on the mic and a trombone solo. Then came out Malik Moore and Alex Desert to lead the vocal parade. The harmonies of these two along with Deston Berry on keys were crisper than a freshly pressed shirt. I mean forget about cutting hot butter, these guys could melt frozen butter in an instant with how sweet they sounded.
