Mike Park on Roots Rock Rebel! March 21 podcast

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Hi folks!

Welcome back to another weekly edition of Roots Rock Rebel! This week we did our show on March 21st, which is of course the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The day marks the anniversary of the 1969 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, when score of Black people who were peacefully involved in a protest against the apartheid regime were killed by security forces. The incident lead to the outbreak of the global boycott movement of South Africa which eventually brought down the apartheid regime.

Of course, one day per year is not enough to fight racism. Luckily, there is a strong history in ska and punk music of standing up to racism and fascism. In fact, the very two-tone ska aesthetic (white and black, checkers, etc.) was based on the idea of racial unity.

One man who has been at the centre of bringing anti-racist politics into the ska scene for the last couple decades is Mike Park, who was also our special guest on this week’s show! Mike is a legend in his own right. He was an original member of the seminal 3rd wave California ska band Skankin’ Pickle, and then went on to other great projects like The Chinkees, The Bruce Lee Band, and now he performs as a solo artist. In 1998, Mike brought together the influential Ska Against Racism tour with bands like The Toaster, Less Than Jake, and Mustard Plug. Oh yeah, and he is also the founder of the mighty Asian Man Records!

Mike spoke to us about ska against racism, his music, and more! For those of you in Montreal, he’ll be playing a special show up here as part of the Pouzza Fest on May 19. Check out some of Mike Park’s work here:

Also on the show this week, we heard some lively soul and ska, and new music from Classics of Love, Mad Bomber Society, Dan P and the Bricks, and more!

Next week on the show, we’ll be bringing you an interview with The Bashments from southern California. Stay tuned!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel AGAINST RACISM!
