Reggae Against Prisons – Roots Rock Rebel October 2 podcast

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal

Greetings radio massive!

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel, on CKUT radio in Montreal! This is your weekly roundup of ska, reggae, soul, and bass to shake down any prison wall or border.

We began the show this week with a musical tribute to Herman Wallace, a Black Panther and former political prisoner who sadly passed away from cancer this week, just days after being release from a Louisiana jail. Herman Wallace had served the longest sentence in solitary confinement of anyone in US history – 42 years. His death is a sad blow to all movements who fight for racial and social justice, but also an important event to stop and reflect on the struggle in front of us.

In almost perfect timing for the occasion, we just got our hands on the newly re-issued “Free Angela” LP, just put out on Secret Stash records. It is a compilation benefit album originally released in the 1970s as a fundraiser for then-political prisoner and Black power activist Angela Davis.

Also on the podcast this week, we heard lots more music from bands who will be playing at the 5th annual Montreal Ska Festival this year. It’s all going down October 16-20, and we at Roots Rock Rebel are very excited! Keep listening in the weeks to come for your chance to win tickets!

Finally, next week on the program (October 9) we’ll be interviewing David McWane from Big D and the Kids Table! It’ll be the first appearance of Big D on Roots Rock Rebel. We’ve been spinning their new album Stomp and Stroll a whole bunch, and they will of course be up for the Montreal Ska Festival, so you don’t wanna miss this!

And of course, in 2 weeks time, on October 16, Roots Rock Rebel will be broadcasting live from Katacombes for the kick-off party for the ska fest! Our special guest DJs will be Moss Man, Danny Rebel, and Reggie Suede from the Fundamentals. It’s gonna be nuts!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!
