We then hear a sample of what the lucky Londoners got to hear at the London International Ska Festival last weekend, a snippet from the newly released movie, 'Marley' - can't wait to see it! I drop a new tune from Jon Cleary too, what do you think of it? I saw and met Jon at Bluesfest in Byron Bay Australia a few years ago. He plays piano and the music from New Orleans so hearing this rocksteady number (a cover of an Allen Toussaint) was a real treat. Enjoy.

Roots Rock Rebel
Wednesday, May 9, 2012
10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!
Welcome to this week's Roots Rock Rebel podcast!
Our weekly blend of ska, reggae, punk rock, and soul music paid tribute to some heavy hitters in the music business this week. The music world lost two amazing innovators recently. Adam Yauch (aka MCA) of the Beastie Boys, a trail-blazer in punk rock, hip-hop, and funk, as well as Lloyd Brevett, the founding bass player of The Skatalites from Jamaica. We spent the first part of the show paying tribute to these two great musicians, and celebrating their artistic contributions.

Our special guest on the program this week was Eitan Avineri, who is the executive producer and trumpet player for Western Standard Time, a big band tribute to the Skatalites! It was very fitting that the week of Lloyd Brevett's passing, we spoke with Avineri about the legacy of the Skatalites music, and explored a whole new interpretation of traditional ska. Western Standard Time combines all the best in jazz, swing, and ska, with a distinct LA flavour. The band also features an all-star line-up made up of past and present members of The Aggrolites, Hepcat, and Jump With Joey. Check them out and buy their new full-length album here!
www.wstbigband.com
This podcast is also jam packed with new music and rarities from Maddie Ruthless, The Inciters, King Django, and Joe Strummer. As always, we have some big guests coming up on the show in the weeks to come, including The Beatdown, The Fundamentals, Maddie Ruthless, and Victor Rice! So keep tuning in every Wednesday from 10pm-12am EST (not WST!) at www.ckut.ca.
Finally, a big THANK YOU to everyone who voted CKUT as the #1 radio station in the Montreal Mirror's Best of Montreal poll!! Check out the results here.
Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

*ROIR (pronounced “roar”), or Reach Out International Records, is a New York City-based record label founded in 1979 by Neil Cooper.

ROIR was founded the same year that the Sony Walkman launched, and the label initially distributed on cassette exclusively. Much of the label’s catalog is now available in CD and LP formats.

ROIR put out its first release in 1981, by James Chance and the Contortions. In 1982 ROIR released the compilation album New York Thrash, documenting the hardcore punk scene in the New York metropolitan area. It has since become a definitive album in the genre.

Most of ROIR’s early catalog consists of punk rock and No Wave releases by artists such as Suicide, Glenn Branca, and Lydia Lunch. The label later branched out into other genres including hardcore punk, reggae, ska and dub.

ROIR released early recordings by Bad Brains (Bad Brains)[2], Beastie Boys, Einstürzende Neubauten (2X4), Flipper (Blow’n Chunks), MC5, New York Dolls, Television, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and The Skatalites (Stretching Out).</itunes:summary>

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Welcome to this week's podcast of Roots Rock Rebel!

Maybe you love Roots Rock Rebel for the weekly dose of ska, reggae, punk, and class war politics we bring you. Or maybe you stand for the establishment, and you're not that into the show. But either way, this is radio that draws a line in the sand and then says DANCE! Which side are you on?

This week our special guests were Spanner, a ska-punk band from Bristol, England, who definitely know which side they're on. We did an interview with Nick, the drummer, and Ben, who plays guitar and rants. They both ranted about everything from the global economic crisis, to anarchist politics, to ska music, to their new album "Crisis". If you're a fan of ska-punk bands who don't sell-out their values, great politcally charged bands like Operation Ivy, Leftover Crack, or Against All Authority, then you'll probably like Spanner. You can pick up Spanner's music in North America through the good folks at Rebel Time Records.

We also heard some great new music from Kevin Batchelor's Grand Concourse, Maddie Ruthless and the Forthrights, Bobby Sixkiller, and the Bashments. Be sure to tune in next week for an interview with Western Standard Time, a new big band tribute to the Skatalites!

Finally, RIP Lloyd Brevett and Adam Yauch, two men who gave so much to ska, punk, reggae, and amazing music in general.

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

Roots Rock Rebel

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Hello!

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel! We bring you a completely incendiary slab of flaming digital molotov cocktails this week (er... aka. a "podcast"). If you've been tuning in to the show over the last few weeks, you probably know that there is a HUGE student strike happening in Quebec right now. It's so inspiring to see hundreds of thousands of people here finally waking up, fighting back against austerity, tuition hikes, the police, and declaring a "maple spring" (similar to the "Arab spring" last year). Quebec is looking a lot like the beautiful uprisings in the Middle East, Chile, or Greece!

In other incendiary news, our special guest on the program this week was Rich Bomber from Mad Bomber Society! Mad Bomber Society are a long-standing ska band from Edmonton, Alberta. They just released their latest album, called Butchers, Stompers, Cheats. If you're on the west coast of Canada or the USA, you can catch them touring around there this summer, and they'll also be playing at the Victoria Ska Festival in July. Check them out here!

We also had some great music on the podcast from a whole bunch of different genres, like Refused, Billy Bragg, Maddie Ruthless and the Forthrights, and more! Be sure to tune in next Wednesday on the show. Our special guest will be British anarchist ska-punk band Spanner!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!
