Wednesday, May 15, 2013

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Good day radio massive! Welcome back to our weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel. This week, we bring you a POUZZA PREVIEW PODCAST to gear up for the mighty 3rd edition of the Pouzza Fest, a punk rock festival going down in downtown Montreal May 17-19. To gear you all up, we played a bunch of music by bands appearing at the festival, shared our picks for not-to-be-missed shows, and did an interview with Helene McKoy, one of the co-founders of Pouzza. Helene shared with us her love of punk, fast food, and fast music, plus gave some tips on best ways to enjoy the fest!

In the second hour of the program, we bring you an interview with Slackers saxophonist Dave Hillyard, who is set to launch a brand new album called "California". Just today, Dave hit his goal of $5000 for the online fundraising campaign for the album, but you can still go to the campaign page and pre-order this amazing ska/reggae record on either mp3, CD, or vinyl!

Next week on the show, we'll be airing an interview with Rob "Bucket" Hingley, front-man of The Toasters. Not only did the Toasters recently celebrate their 30th anniversary playing ska music around the world, but they just released a brand new EP called "House of Soul" on Bucket's own Megalith record label. Don't miss that!

Plus in coming weeks, we'll be bringing you interviews with The Transplants, The Prizefighters, and more!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!
Hey! Ho! Let's go!!
Welcome to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel! Our special guest on the show this week is no stranger to the Montreal and Canadian ska scenes - Kristen of Kman and the 45s! The band has just come off their first ever cross-Canada tour, and just released their second full-length album "The Skamones Vol. 1". As the name would suggest, the album serves up 10 covers of some of the best Ramones punk rock tunes done ska style. The band is planning to head back across Canada in September, and are playing all around Quebec and Ontario this summer. Check out their website to get all the info!
www.kmanandthe45s.com
Also on the show this week, we heard new music from The Toasters, The Venditions (featuring members of The Dropsteppers), The Prizefighters, and Big D and the Kids Table. Next week on the show, we'll be bringing you an interview with Dave Hillyard, the legendary Slackers sax-man, who is currently raising money to put out his brilliant new album "California". We start and continue throughout this episode with a tribute to the influential saxophonist who fused music and spirituality, Cedric Im Brooks, who has died at age 70 in the United States from cardiac arrest at New York Hospital in Queens. He had been in a coma-like state since February 2010 and according to his sister, Paulette Keise, was unable to speak for the last three years. Brooks became a pupil at the renowned Alpha Boys School aged 11, where he learned music theory and clarinet In his late teens he took up tenor saxophone and flute. He recorded at Studio One for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and went on to team up with Rastafarian drummer Count Ossie in the 70s. He also worked with The Skatalites and took Rolando Alphonso's place on sax in 1999. May Cedric Brooks rest in peace with the other greats in Heaven.

Seen as its New Zealand Music month during May I thought I'd play a few NZ tunes too. I even managed to get a couple of interviews in with Tisyn of The Midnights and Shelton of Soulovus. Go check the bands websites out and take a listen to their music, I know they'd appreciate it. Both bands are keen to get gigs in and around New Zealand and off-shore if anyone is feeling up to supporting them. Both bands capture qualities of current New Zealand reggae. From the RnB fused soul-roots reggae of Soulovus to the spacey dub-injected reggae of The Midnights, these bands produce quality sounds and rhythms. Enjoy!

<itunes:summary>Kia ora everyone! Thats Maori for hello - pronounced kee-ah or-rah! Here in New Zealand during the month of May we seek to celebrate, play, purchase, like, enjoy, share, listen to and dig as music New Zealand music as we can - May is New Zealand Music Month! As it turned out I was able to kick off this years NZ Music Month by interviewing Andy Hoy, drummer for Newtown Rocksteady, a 13 piece band from Wellington playing a hybrid of NZ reggae, rocksteady, ska and dub. I talk to him all about their EP release tour. Their new EP is called 'Goin' Steady' and its available now so please go check it out here.

As this episode went to air Andy and the band were making their way up to Hamilton. Since then I've been to the Yot Club to see Newtown Rocksteady perform two-sets of great ska, rocksteady, and reggae with plenty dub overtones. I was DJ in between their sets. They played their new EP for their first set then they let loose on their second set playing loads of classic sounding ska, rocksteady and reggae. What a night!!!! So glad I went. The moral of this story, if there is one, would be to go support local bands when they come to your town/city. I so wish I had recorded their second set now, it was pure magic! Enjoy.

Hello rebel radio massive!

We're back at it again, a podcast with bass strong enough to bust any cop car window, and enough soul to bring down the most vile of dictatorships!

Our very special guest in the first hour of the program was the British-born, Berlin-based reggae producer JStar! It was our pleasure to have him on the program for the second time, and his new album "Licensed Plates" just dropped last February. It features some great remixes of Madness, The Black Seeds, The Unlimiters, and much more. And what's more, it's out in a variety of formats, including digital, CD, and vinyl. Check it out!

http://jstarmusic.com/

In the second hour of the show, we were joined in studio by a great local Montreal ska-punk band, Vinny Savage and the Wild Side. It was their first ever appearance on Roots Rock Rebel, and it was just before they rocked out at the 4th edition of Rock Against Racism MTL last week at Katacombes. The band is planning on releasing a new full-length album later this summer, but for now, check out their 5-song EP on bandcamp.

Be sure to tune back in to Roots Rock Rebel this week on May 1st for a very special Mayday tribute! It will be puuuuure class war on the dancefloor to celebrate International Workers Day! So punch your boss, take the day off, and turn up your radio!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

 <itunes:summary>Greetings Musical Lovers!
Here we are, the night before ANZAC Day (25th April) - a day when New Zealand and Australia remembers its soldiers who served and died in the First War World. I had several uncles who served during the second World War who were in the Maori Battalion. ANZAC Day is a time that I also remember them. I've selected tunes that echo what many have been saying for a long time, that War is unnecessarily so, that peace, love and unity still remain common values of the people. I'm not altogether anti-war but I am anti-sytem telling the people what to do for the gain of a few at the top of the power-pyramid. Then as I got half way through this session I decided to change things up and played love tunes about relationships - some wars are had in the relationships we have. So if you're one whos giving your partner, boyfriend, girlfriend or lover a hard time, this ones for you - stop the bash and start the pash! GO FEET!

Wednesday, April 17, 2013
10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!
Greetings radio massive!
Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel. We are proud to bring you another top notch show this week, with 2 amazing interviews. Our guest in the first hour of the program probably needs little introduction. Pauline Black is the lead singer of the British 2-tone ska pioneers The Selecter. The Selecter have been setting the bar high for energetic and politically-conscious ska since the late 1970s, and they're still at it! Their most recent album is called "String Theory", and they are currently doing a tour of the south-west of the USA.
This is the third time we've interviewed Pauline on Roots Rock Rebel, and every time she is sharper and more insightful than the last. A well-rounded woman, Pauline is also an author and actress. Be sure to pick up her wonderful autobiography "Black by Design", and head on over to The Selecter's website to pick up a copy of their new album!
www.theselecter.net
In the second hour of the show, we were joined in studio by Jérôme and Alexandre of the Montreal francophone reggae combo Francbâtards. Francbâtards brings together francophone influences from around the world for a very unique sound, which you can check out on their debut EP, available on their bandcamp site for free or by donation! They will be playing in Montreal on April 25th for the next Rock Against Racism MTL concert at Katacombes, and have a whole bunch of shows lined up around Quebec this summer. Not to be missed!

Our guests on the program next week will be Jstar and Vinny Savage and the Wild Side! Plus we'll be hearing more brand new tunes from Dave Hillyard and the Rocksteady 7, Kman and the 45's, and more!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!

Hear ye! Hear ye massive!

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel! On the program this week, we were very pleased to welcome into our FM fifedom the esteemed Lord Nugent (aka. Agent Jay, aka. Jay Nugent). Jay is most notably the guitarist of NYC ska legends The Slackers, and also the brains behind the Crazy Baldhead soundsystem. We've been happy to have him on the program on a few occasions in the past, but on this podcast, he was on to speak about his new side project, the Reggay Lords!

Based out of Brooklyn, this 5-piece band offers up sweet rocksteady and reggae tunes, with a hint of ska, and some not-so-subtle political messages. They have a new full-length album which is available for digital download via the powerhouse online ska/reggae label Whatevski Records.

Besides that, we also paid tribute on the show this week to the one Harry J, Jamaican producer extraordinaire, who sadly passed away of diabetes complications on April 3rd. Plus we also heard some nice anti-Thatcher tunes to celebrate her demise. Yeaaaah, class war on the dancefloor is what we're all about. Plus more new music from The Brains, The Selecter, and The Lions.

Next week on the show, we'll be bringing you two huge interviews with Pauline Black from The Selecter, plus a local Montreal band Francbatards. Watch out for that!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!
