Turntable.fm

I’ve lamented in a past blog entry about how some ska/rocksteady/reggae bands and labels have yet to jump into digital distribution. Jamaican music itself is already a niche genre of music, and I feel that bands and labels have to work extra harder to get their music out there to the mass. Ignoring digital distribution is to be frank, a stupid move and will just slowly kill the music. Being elitist about staying “true to the roots” of releasing and distributing Jamaican music does nothing to draw in new fans in a genre that so desperately needs new blood. (I would also argue that staying true to the roots is better served in the MUSIC, rather than the method of distributing it).

But digital distribution is so…Web 1.0…so old and archaic! Itunes is just a legal version of what we were all doing in the late 90s with Napster! Napster started in 1999…over a decade ago, and in the world of the internet and technology, a decade ago is more like two lifetimes ago. We’re already well into Web 2.0 (social!), and some are even claiming that we’re entering the era of Web 3.0 (cloud based computing!).

But what does this have to do with anything ska, rocksteady, or reggae?

Hang on, I’m getting to that.

Enter Turntable.fm, a new website that’s sure to be your next addiction. What exactly is it? Think of it as a chatroom for music. Or even better, maybe a Twitter for music. Users can create rooms and up to 5 users can “DJ” for any number of people in that particular room. You can choose music from Turntable’s database, or you can upload your own music, which is accessible by you and ONLY you (to prevent piracy issues), and the “DJs” take turn playing music off their playlist for all those in the room to hear. Users can either “like” or “dislike” a song that’s currently playing, and there’s a meter to measure their response. Get enough dislikes, and your song will be skipped, get enough “likes” and you earn points and inflate your ego.

That’s it. That’s the idea. A group of people playing music off their playlist for another group of people. Such a simple idea that it’s a wonder that it hasn’t been thought of…earlier.

The thing is, Turntable.fm is super addictive. You either want to continue staying in the room to play YOUR song, or you want to hear what the next “DJ” has to play. I’ve spent all evenings doing NOTHING but playing around Turntable, and while not all the music people play are good…you’re opening yourself up to the possibility of a lot of new music.

Turntable.fm can be a good thing for the ska/rocksteady/reggae scene For bands (and labels), it’s yet a another way to showcase your music and interact (pretty directly, I might add) directly with your fanbase and listeners. It’s a way to showcase your music without giving it away for free, and if your music is on Itunes, listeners can also easily buy your music if they like what they hear.

For fans, it’s a new way to discover new tunes, or maybe rediscover the classics. All without having to resort to piracy.

Either way, Turntable.fm presents an interesting way to draw in new fans for a genre that could use some new blood.

Music, especially Jamaican music, has always been a social event at its core. And in a way, Turntable.fm allows people like you and me to mimic what the Jamaican DJs did in the 50s and 60s: Just a couple of music fans spinning music for fans of music. With social media avenues like Turntable.fm, Twitter, and Facebook, bands and fans of Jamaican music alike have new ways to interact and connect with each other.

How to join Turntable.fm: Right now, Turntable.fm is in it’s beta phase and you need an invite to be able to join this program. But have no fear….getting an invite is as easy as being our friend! If you’re friends of The Pressure Drop Soundcast on Facebook, you’ll automatically get an invite. It’s that easy! You’re that special! You can find me usually in the Jamaican Archives room!

Stomp Records Still on Top!

Photo by JEN ARNOLD & KEVIN COLE (Montreal Mirror)

Montreal’s long-running ska/punk record label Stomp Records is back on top! They just got voted the #1 Best local record label in the annual Montreal Mirror “Best of Montreal” readers poll. The timing couldn’t be any better for ska fans, as the label is putting out more ska and reggae than ever these days, with recent releases from The Beatdown, The Aggrolites, and the Resignators, and a new full-length album from the Planet Smashers coming out this June.

Check out the full article from the Montreal Mirror.

“I’m really happy,” says Stomp Records founder and maximo leader Matt Collyer. “We didn’t stuff the ballots, for once, so it’s nice to get that recognition.” Mere jest or awkward admission? Either way, Stomp legitimately edged out second-placers Dare to Care by a fistful of votes this year. Not bad for a label that flies the flag of ska, a sound and scene many have assumed to be dead and buried.

“The number of bands, the quality of the bands, the interest from kids and the press, definitely took a nice dip. Things come and go, and I think it’s probably a good thing. It wasn’t necessary to have it in the limelight the whole time. That said, through that whole period, there were some very, very good bands putting out ska music. It’s just that people didn’t hear about them. Hopefully they’ll hear about ’em now, and people will take another look at ska music.”

A useful tool in that respect would be the forthcoming All-Skanadian Club Vol. 5, a new installment in Stomp’s long-dormant flagship anthology series. “It was the first thing we ever did as Stomp Records. It was a group effort back then, the people involved have changed a bit but again, it’s the same idea. This time, we consulted the people from the Victoria Ska Festival and the Montreal Ska Festival for their input, not only to find bands but also to be part of the jury. I mean, there were 40 submissions and we could only fit 22 bands on there—only 22! It’s pretty cool, we weren’t expecting that kind of reaction. We didn’t think there were 40 bands out there, and we even missed some.”

That’s hardly the only release they have slated—following a recent record by L.A.’s awesome Aggrolites (“A Canada-only deal, but still, that’s a score!”), lined up for the coming months are albums from NYC’s Turbo A.C.s, psychobilly acts Coffin Cats and the Brains, and ska upstarts the Resignators and Rude City Riot. “Then we got a record in late June from some shitty band called the Planet Smashers,” Collyer adds, as though anyone cares.

“We work hard and we work hard in the subculture—the scenes, the different subcultures of the genres,” Collyer says of their surprising success in the BOM poll. “It’s going to be an exciting year for ska music. I hope the bands follow up with some good records and don’t lose the momentum we’re building here.”

Forthrights Tour Blog: Day 1 w/Free Download

Sammy KFor those that don’t know me, which is probably all of you, my name is Sammy. I’m a kid, born and raised in the great state of New Jersey. Yes, New Jersey. No, I don’t know Springsteen, but I have spent many a nights drunkenly singing ‘Born to run” on the streets of Asbury Park. My Family was very into me playing music, and exposing me to everything that could inspire. How that led me to be in a Rocksteady band, I just don’t know. Me and 3 of my best friends are heading out tomorrow on a great adventure. No, not with Pee Wee, but with The Forthrights. We have been making music together for a few years now, played a whole lot of shows in the North East, as well as in the Mid West. Nows the time for us to pass the Great Wall of Chicago, and head all the way to the Pacific ocean, and the land of the Gwen’s, the Fish’s and those Hepcats.

I got in touch with Jason and Gabe over here at Musical Occupation, with hopes to start a blog about living in a van with your best friends, living on 10 dollars a day, and the things that happen on tour. Armed with a Blackberry, a Flip camera, and a run down Macbook, I’m hoping to show you lovely, lovely people, what it’s like to go on tour for 60+ days. I’m gonna try to post about the spots we eat at, the cool people we meet, and the biggest tunes we find on Spotify!

Like I said earlier, the tour kickoff show is tomorrow, April 7, at Otto’s Shrunken Head In New York City. We’re headed out to Indiana after that, to meet up with We Are The Union, a Detroit based band, who we’re doing the Ska Is Dead Presents Young Guns 2011 tour with. We’re headed down to to New Orleans, back up the East coast, and ending up in Chicago. Along the way, we are meeting up with Stuck Lucky, from Tennessee, The Brunt of It from New England, The Green Room Rockers, from Indiana, as well as the Fad. We are all really psyched about the tour, and were all looking forward to the next 30 days.

After that, the lovely miss Maddie Ruthless is meeting us in Chicago, and were headed down south, and out west with her. That tour, which were calling “The Rocksteady is Ruining my life” tour, is going to head up the coast of California with Queen P, and the Delerians.

Here’s the first post. I-ficially. tour. tour. tour. Todays big tune(s) come from one of my favorite singers in the world. Mr King Django. He just put out a new digital EP over at Whatevski records! go check it out! It is a compilation of some vinyl stuff he put out over the last few years. He murders it with the early reggae cuts, and One Finger. Hot Damn! Big tune from the Skinnerbox Catalog re-done over the Freedom Sounds(rip) Ethiopian Kings Rhythm. Go grab it over at www.Whatevski.org
