Wednesday, February 1st, 2012
10pm-12am, CKUT, 90.3 FM, Montreal!
Hello Roots Rock Rebel fans!
Welcome to this week's podcast sendout! Our special guest on the program this week was Toronto-based 2-tone ska artist Prince Perry. He has a brand new album out with his backing band, The Gladtones, called "Love at the End of the Century". The Gladtones are an interesting band in of themselves, made up of members of Toronto ska allstars from King Apparatus (Mitch "King Kong" Girio) and The Harmonauts (Ryan Chopik). The new album is great - reminiscent of The Specials, Me Mom and Morgentaler, and a bit of skinhead reggae a la Aggrolites. Check them out and get your hands on the album here:
www.princeperry.com

Plus we heard brand new music on this week's show from The Pinstripes, King Kong Girio, and Jimmy Cliff. We also paid tribute to the legendary Jamaican DJ King Stitt, the ugly man himself, who sadly passed away last week. Fire corner! Be sure to tune in next Wednesday on Roots Rock Rebel, from 10pm-12am EST! Val from the Montreal Ska Society will be filling in, and the Hangers will be joining her live in the studio. Fun fun!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

Hello radio rebels!

Welcome back to another weekly digital dose of Roots Rock Rebel, the only radio show on the planet combining the mighty power of bagels, anarchy, and reggae!

Our special guest on the program this week was Mike Sarason, the lead singer and saxophonist from the Pinstripes, a great ska-reggae band from Cincinnati, Ohio. They have a new album coming out in early February called "I", and we had a chance to chat with Mike about the new album, as well as their recent kickstarter campaign, which allowed the band to self-finance and produce the new material. Check out the Pinstripes and get your hands on "I", because it is definitely sounding like one of the hottest albums of the year:

http://thepinstripes.net/

Also on the program this week, we heard brand new stuff from Prince Perry, 1-Stop Experience, Chris Murray, and more! Plus we paid tribute to the late legendary reggae producer Winston Riley, who sadly died in Jamaica on January 19th. Riley was the producer of the infamous "Stalag" riddim, and helped launch the carreers of Sister Nancy, Buju Banton, Cutty Ranks, and so many others. Rest in peace!

Until next week, stay rude, and stay rebel!

Hello proud wage slaves and radio rebels!

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel, the only radio program which brings you a weekly heaping serving of reggae, punk, ska, and soul, all lathered with a thick topping of anarchist class-war politics! Oooo I can hear you all drooling now....

Our special guest on the show this week was Greg Roy, the drummer of Dub Trinity from Peterborough, Ontario. Dub Trinity describes their music as blending "the styles of Burning Spear, Woody Guthrie and Linton Kwesi Johnson while their music fuses roots dub-reggae and ska with Meters-style funk, with a dash of Fela Kuti's afrobeat and picket line solidarity". Sounds good to us! They put out a nice 8-song album in 2011 called Alexandria, which covers many different music styles, and features the collaboration of world-renowned reggae producer Dubmatix. Check them out online!

www.dubtrinity.com

Other than that, we played plenty of anti-fascist punk, skinhead reggae, and soulful rocksteady on this week's program. Hope you enjoy!

Next week on the program will be an all-women riot-grrrrl extravaganza with a special guest DJ, and in coming weeks we'll have interviews with The Pinstripes, Colectivo, and the Hangers. Stay tuned!

Until next week,

Stay rude, stay rebel

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011
10pm-12am, CKUT 90.3FM, Montreal!
Hello Radio Rebels! Welcome back to another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel,
beaming out thousands of pounds of punk-soul-reggae energy from the island of Montreal
every Wednesday! This week on the program, we did our annual year in review special.
It was a “best of 2011” throwdown. Like in past years, we counted down our picks for the
top 5 ska/reggae albums of the year, and here they are!
5. The Selecter - “Made in Britain” (Vocaphone Music)

These 2-tone ska legends came back with a timely, poignant album this year,
hitting with world with an anti-racist, anti-fascist ska punch just as riots were
tearing up the UK again. Pauline Black also released her auto-biography “Black
by Design” at the same time, proving herself to be one of the best vocalists and
political voices in the ska world. This record proves The Selecter still have the great
grit and attitude today that they did 30 years ago.
4. The Fabulous Lolo - “S/T” (independent)

If 2010 was the year of the mashup, 2011 was the year of the cover album.
And there were some great ones that came out! The Fabulous Lolo, aka. Lorraine Muller
(ex-Kingpins) assembled an all-star cast of Montreal musicians, including members of
One Night Band and Danny Rebel and the KGB. This record is 7 covers of rocksteady and
rock n roll classics, and it sounds divine. Bucket from the Toasters says The Fabulous Lolo
are one of his favourite bands right now, and I'm inclined to agree. A Montreal classic.
3. Smoke Like A Fish - “Blood, Fish, and Bone” (Do the Dog records)

Wow! An upbeat ska record with great licks, subversive lyrics, catchy songs,
and one of the best Zounds covers I've ever heard. A solid release from these
British ska stalwarts.
2. Mr. T-Bone and the Young Lions - “Nothing to lose” (Jump Up records)

Mr. T-Bone and the Young Lions are consistently one of the best ska-reggae
groups in the world, hands down. This is not the first time one of their albums
has graced the Roots Rock Rebel top 5 list. This Italian band released “Nothing
to lose” on Jump Up records this past fall, and it serves up everything their fans
have come to expect – soulful harmonies, great horns, funky rhythms, and
rebellious lyrics!
1. Jimmy Cliff - “The Sacred Fire EP” (Collective Sounds)

Our pick for the top reggae album of the year comes from Jamaican
reggae legend Jimmy Cliff! He released “The Sacred Fire EP” in December.
It is the culmination of an incredible collaboration between Cliff and
Rancid-frontman Tim Armstrong, who produced the album. It's got one
Jimmy Cliff original on it, and some great covers of The Clash, Bob Dylan,
and of course, Rancid. And to top it off, the backing band on this release
features some ex-members of The Aggrolites and Hepcat. A must-have!
So there you go, our top 5 picks for 2011. For the rest of the show, we played
some other great releases that came out this year, including new stuff from
The Slackers, The Planet Smashers, and Deal's Gone Bad.
Hey, follow us on facebook! www.facebook.com/ckutrootsrockrebel
We're taking next week off, but we want to wish everyone a happy holidays, and
we'll be back soon!
Until next week, Stay rude, stay rebel,
Aaron Maiden

Roots Rock Rebel
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
10pm-12am, CKUT 90.3FM, Montreal!

Hello Radio Rebels!
It's time again for another weekly podcast of Roots Rock Rebel! This week on the program,
our special guest in studio was The Skinny. The Skinny are a newer band on the Montreal
scene, comprised of former members of Stepper and Take the Boys. Their sound is a
stripped-down, skinny blend of soul, reggae, and ska, very reminiscent of the Chris Murray
Combo. You can catch them at a variety of shows around Montreal, including a big show
at Petit Campus this Friday, December 2 alongside Kman and the 45s! Anyways, The Skinny
played a couple live songs for us, and talked about their music. Check out the band here:

www.myspace.com/skinnyreggae

Also, 2011 is quickly coming to a close, and soon we will be counting down our top 5
ska/reggae releases of the year for Roots Rock Rebel on our year-end round-up on December 28.
BUT WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! What were your favorite releases of the year?
Shoot us a message at rebel@ckut.ca

Finally, we got our first ever complaint for Roots Rock Rebel (after 7 years!) in the mail, from
a listener who wasn't happy about the interview we aired last week on Punks Against Apartheid.
Actually, I don't think this 'listener' actually 'listened' to the interview. Aparently, some people
don't like coming to terms with the fact that Israel is an apartheid state. Yikes. Anyways, it actually
makes me happy we got a complaint, because at least we are starting a dialogue about this
important issue in the punk rock and ska community. If you have any questions about PAA, or the
boycott campaign against Israeli apartheid, don't hesitate to send me an email at rebel@ckut.ca.

Next week on the program, we'll be joined in the studio by Chris Barry of the Montreal pioneering
punk band the 222's!

Until next week,
Stay rude, stay rebel,
Aaron Maiden

Hello Radio Rebels!
We're back with another HUGE show for Roots Rock Rebel this week. Our special guest
on the program was Alexander Billet, who is a music journalist in Chicago, and one of the
co-founders of Punks Against Apartheid. Punks Against Apartheid (PAA) is a global grassroots
initiative that encourages punk bands, labels, promoters, and fans to support the Palestinian
campaign for Boycotts, Divestments, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid. Similar
to how many musicians refused to play in South Africa during the apartheid regime there,
many musicians today are refusing to play in Israel because of their occupation of the West Bank
and Gaza, and racist laws that discriminate against Palestinian citizens of Israel. Some musicians
who recently have cancelled shows in Israel include Elvis Costello, The Pixies, Gorillaz, and
most recently, because of PAA's efforts, Jello Biafra (ex-Dead Kennedys)!

So head on over to their recently-launched site, check 'em out, and sign your support – especially
if you are in a band, have a label, book shows, etc!

www.punksagainstapartheid.com

Also, if you want more information on the BDS campaign to end Israeli apartheid and
free Palestine, go here:

www.bdsmovement.net
www.pacbi.org

Next week on the program, we'll be joined in the studio by The Skinny a brand new ska/reggae
band in Montreal featuring ex-members of Stepper and Take the Boys! Check 'em out:

Until next week,
Stay rude, stay rebel,

Roots Rock Rebel
Wednesday, November 16, 2011
10pm-12am, CKUT 90.3FM, Montreal!

Hello!
After taking a week off, Roots Rock Rebel is back and more pissed than
ever! But anger only ever led to some of the most fist-shakingly good
creations in punk, ska, and reggae, so let's feed it! Plus we always want
to reaffirm our hatred of the boys in blue, and our love for the millions
of you people out there who are occupying, decolonizing, striking,
fighting, and skanking!

On the program this week, our special guest was Jamaican reggae vocalist
Little Roy! Little Roy began his career in the late 1960s in Jamaica under
the wing of legends like Coxsonne Dodd and Prince Buster, who gave him his
stage name. He still records and performs widely today, and his most
recent album is the acclaimed "Battle for Seattle", which is a Nirvana
reggae cover album! Before some of you purists dismiss the idea of a cover
album, you should check this out. It reminds me of some of the great cover
material by the Easy Dub Allstars. Go check it out!

www.battleforseattle.com

Also on the show this week, my good friend DJ Boban from Serbia came by to
spin us a set of ska, reggae, and punk from the Balkans and
former-Yugoslavia. Fun stuff! Prijatno!

Lots of exciting stuff coming up on the next few weeks of the program,
including interviews and in-studio performances by The Skinny (ex-Stepper,
Montreal), Tasty Grooves, and Punks Against Apartheid!

Until next week,
Stay rude, stay rebel,
Aaron Maiden

Hi radionauts!

It's Roots Rock Rebel time again this week! First up, I want to say a HUGE

it so that it continues, please go to www.ckut.ca and make a pledge today!

On the podcast for November 2, we have a few very special guests for you.

In the first hour of the program, we interviewed Zeke, the vocalist from

LA ska band The Bohunks. They have a new album out called "In the waiting

room" which is full of tight, catchy ska, the way it's meant to be played.

Check out The Bohunks!

www.thebohunks.com

Then in the second hour of the program, we had a Mod Invasion! Pat and Ben

from The Montreal Mod Club (or Modtreal... great name!) came by to spin a

set of rare 45s of mostly Montreal or Canadian artists. Amazing! If you

are in Montreal, make sure you check out The Mod Club the first Saturday

of every month at Blizzarts. And go check out the Parka Avenue blog:

www.parkaavenue.com

Next week we're taking the week off the show, but Roots Rock Rebel will be

back in full force on November 16 with an interview with Jamaican reggae

singer Little Roy!

Until then,

Stay rude, stay rebel,

Aaron Maiden
