Mobtown Ska Sounds 71 The Dynamic Music of Clancy Eccles

Clancy Eccles is one of the most dynamic producers in reggae music. Following in the footsteps of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Clancy began his career in music as a singer. He also like Perry cut his first record for Coxsonne Dodd in 1959 (a tune by the name of “Freedom”). He took a break from music and in 1967 began recording himself and other musicians. The music he created was odd, original, and all his own. The backing band he used was called the Dynamites featuring organ player Winston Wright. The band also played with a number of other producers (for Derrick Harriot they were called the Crystalites), but the work they did with Clancy remains some of their best. The music created by Clancy and the band is important for a number of reasons. At the time it was recorded Jamaican music was changing. Rocksteady was changing to reggae and this music shares elements of both. In the U.K. his music was part of the skinhead reggae movement. I included a number of tracks Clancy sings on. Also some of my favorite songs he did with other artists like Alton Ellis, King Stitt, Theo Beckford, Eric ‘Monty’ Morris, etc.
Hope you enjoy the podcast. A lot of this music is easy to find via itunes, amazon, or your local music store (if you have one.) Some of the tracks on this podcast were taken from a new release off of Pressure Sounds.

This dub album not only highlights Clancy Eccles but showcases his band the Dynamites. The album features King Tubby at the controls. These recordings were recently found and PS did a great job. I highly recommend this album to any fans of Eccles, the Dynamites, or King Tubby. Great early dub.
Enjoy!!!
